The Life of Abraham
Lesson 1: Summons From God
(Genesis 11:27-12:9)
For students in my Wednesday night class on The Life of Abraham: Handouts and Notes for Lesson 1 are now available online. Lord willing we will cover this text tomorrow night at 6:30pm at Bellevue Church of Christ!
When was the last time you were in a Bible class that studied the life of Abraham? If you are like me….it has been a while. As a matter of fact I can’t remember a single class that I’ve been involved with as an adult (teacher or student) where the primary focus was on Abraham . Why is this? His story is a staple of children’s sunday school classes, but then for some reason we abandon the subject as we get older.
Consider what the Apostle Paul says about Abraham in Galatians:
Galatians 3:7–9 (ESV)
7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
If it is indeed true that the Gospel message was originally preached to Abraham, and that all Christians are “sons of Abraham,” is it not critical that we have a thorough understanding of God’s working throughout his life?
To that end, I am excited to announce that I will be teaching a new class beginning tomorrow night at Bellevue Church of Christ in the auditorium at 6:30pm. It is simply entitled, The Life of Abraham, and will be an in-depth study of this great man beginning in Genesis 11. I would like to invite everyone to join us for an expository look at the life of the man who provided the blueprint for living a life with faith in God.
Tomorrow morning I will be preaching at Berea Church of Christ in Lebanon, TN.
The title of my sermon is…
“Joy in Trials”
James 1:2-12
This sermon looks at the reasons why James says that followers of Christ should find joy in trials (or suffering) of life.
If you are in the Middle Tennessee area, we would love to have you join us tomorrow morning at 9am for worship!
