After a miserable run on Monday, yesterday’s run was significantly better. I’ve come to grips with the fact that I simply cannot hit the target paces from then Hansons plan when the humidity is at 95%. It’s funny that in the weeks leading up to the start of my scheduled training, when I was practicing the different pace ranges, that I was having trouble with being too fast! Of course, many of those mornings were in 50s or 60s with 60% humidity. It makes a BIG difference.
Anyway, I met Nathan and Brian at 5:00am on the Harpeth River Greenway for an easy-paced 8-miler. My legs felt better than Monday, and overall the run was much better too. We kept the pace very chill for the first 5-miles before picking it up a-bit for the last 3 (probably ran a bit too hard for the final 400m on the last one):
As we were nearing the end of the run, we came upon a few geese and their babies. Nathan said something to the effect of “Look, there’s a gaggle a geese with their goslings!” I was not aware that a group of geese was a “gaggle,” nor that baby geese were “goslings.” You never know what you might learn on a run with Nathan and Brian. BTW….the momma geese hissed at us very sternly as we passed on the greenway.
For this morning’s run (on National Running Day), I met 6 members of our running group at the main gates of Percy Warner park at 5:15am. However, my legs were so dead that I could not hang with them up the two big climbs during the first mile. By the time I reached the first mile marker, they were completely out of sight. Since the park is extremely hilly, I decided that if I was going to slug out this run by myself I might as well head back down to the main gates and find a flatter route:
My legs felt rough going back down the hill, and this continued as I ran out into Belle Meade through the end of mile 3. As I was beginning mile 4, for some reason I started subconsciously counting to myself, and fell into this nice rhythm. Once I became aware of what I was doing I just decided to keep on counting every 4 strides. I did this 1 to 100 over and over again, and my nice rhythm continued throughout the remainder of the 6-mile run. I have no idea how many times I reached 100 and started over, but it was a LOT. However, my legs loosened up and I really enjoyed the second half of my run. Weird, but it was good.
I was so busy preparing for my new Bible class that I was not able to get in any cross-training on Tuesday night. However I got in the following activities today:
Abs / Core
- Plank w Reach (15 x 2)
- Side Raises (25 x 2)
- Bridge (25 x 2)
- Superman / Banana (25 x 2)
Chest
- Standard Pushups (30 reps)
- Military Pushups (12 reps)
- Wide Pushups (32 reps)
- Decline Pushups (20 reps)
- Diamond Pushups (6 reps)
Total = 100 Reps
